Since the P5+1 (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, plus Germany) and Iran concluded a nuclear agreement in July 2015—the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—Iran has escalated its destabilizing and aggressive regional activities:
May 25: Iran announces that it has built a third underground ballistic missile factory and will keep developing its missile program. “Iran’s third underground factory has been built by the Guards in recent years…We will continue to further develop our missile capabilities forcefully,” said Amirali Hajizadeh, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ airspace division.
May 7: Iran tests a high-speed torpedo in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a U.S. official. The torpedo can reportedly attain speeds of approximately 230 mph and has a range of six miles.
