New Zealand rocked by huge 6.4 magnitude earthquake

The quake struck at 7pm local time (8am BST) and caused shaking at the south end of the South Island.

It was originally registered at 6.8M before being downgraded slightly to 6.4M by GeoNet, who said the quake had “confused our system a bit”.

People took to social media to share their experiences.

One said: “Just touching base after the #eqnz wobble not long ago, everyone ok?”
