Shallow M6.2 earthquake hits near Komandorskiye Ostrova, Russia

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit near Komandorskiye Ostrova, Russia at 11:05 UTC on July 17, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 7.9 km (4.9 miles). GFZ Potsdam registered it as M6.2 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), followed by M6.1 at 11:23 UTC at the same depth. For the second quake, USGS is reporting a preliminary magnitude of 5.1.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 353.6 km (219.7 miles) WNW of Attu, Alaska and 529.9 km (329.3 miles) ESE of Klyuchi (population 10 000), Russia.
