via Major US-Russian arguments over Syria three days after reported Trump-Putin deal – DEBKAfile

US Defense Secretary James Mattis said Tuesday that the US would continue to fight ISIS in Syria and Iraq until the Geneva conference reaches a political solution on the Syrian conflict. “We are gong to make sure we set the conditions for a diplomatic solution,” he said, exposing a large gap left in the deal that Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin concluded in Vietnam over the weekend.
A short time later, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov exposed another gap: “The United States believes that the right direction in Syria is regime change. But, despite not demanding that the Syrian President Bashar Assad resigned immediately, their claims contradict the Geneva agreements.” Lavrov followed Russian Defense Minister Gen. Sergey Shoigu, who accused the US air force of deliberately interfering with Russian air operations to stop ISIS recapturing Abu Kamal from Hizballah on Sunday.
