A common fallacy of the stock market is that once valuations get stretched, chances to make money dry up.

Don’t tell that to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, which just published new research highlighting huge opportunities it says have been unlocked by rare conditions brewing under the market’s surface.

It’s referring to a measure called dispersion, which reflects how widely market returns are distributed. Looking at the forward earnings yield for S&P 500 stocks, BAML finds dispersion is the highest since 2009, when the market was just starting to recover from the financial crisis.
