After a dramatic debate and with just one vote to spare, the state House on Thursday agreed to send to Gov. John Bel Edwards legislation that would restore voting rights to some felons on probation and parole.
The House voted 54-42, after more than an hour of debating the merits of restoring voting rights after a five year “cooling off” period.
“They pay their taxes, but they don’t even get a chance to vote for you as their representative or any other person,” Rep. Pat Smith, D-Baton Rouge, said. “All we’re trying to do is give them the right to vote, most of them say before they die.”
