U.S. Supreme Court nominee Barrett meets senators in race to confirmation

WASHINGTON, Sept 29 (Reuters) – The sprint to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to become President Donald Trump’s third conservative appointee to the U.S. Supreme Court begins in earnest on Tuesday as the jurist meets with lawmakers at the U.S. Capitol, starting with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Barrett will meet McConnell in the morning in what will be a day packed with informal visits, part of a long-standing tradition leading into multi-day confirmation hearings set to begin on Oct. 12.

Judge Amy Coney Barrett: “I Love the United States and the United States Constitution”

Federal appeals court Judge Amy Coney Barrett today accepted the nomination from President Donald Trump to serve on the Supreme Court. During her acceptance speech, she promised she would uphold the rule of law and spoke highly of the value of her family.

“I love the United States and I love the Constitution of the United States,” she exclaimed.

“The president has nominated me to serve on the United States Supreme Court. And that institution belongs to all of us. If confirmed, I would not assume that role for the sake of those in my own circle and certainly not for my own sake. I would assume this role to serve you,” Barrett said.

In words that will be comforting to pro-life Americans upset by the Supreme Court making pro-abortion law from the bench in Roe v. Wade, Judge Barrett added: “A judge must apply the law as written. Judges are not policy makers and they must be resolute in setting aside any policy views they might hold.”

“If the Senate does me the honor of confirming me, I pledge to discharge the responsibilities of this job to the best of my ability. I love the U.S. and I love the U.S. Constitution. I am truly humbled by the prospect of serving on the Supreme Court,” she said.

Tightening polls in key swing states raise pressure on Biden

New polls show former Vice President Joe Biden running strong in states President Trump must win to secure a second term, but the race is close in Florida and tightening in Arizona, raising pressure on the Democratic nominee ahead of the first presidential debate.

Biden has several pathways to victory, with new surveys showing him neck and neck with Trump in traditionally red states, such as Texas and Georgia, and in states Trump won comfortably in 2016, like Iowa and Ohio.

The Democratic nominee continues to run up the score over Trump in national polls. Biden’s lead in the former “blue wall” states has been consistent and comfortable for months now.

Trump to nominate Amy Coney Barrett to Supreme Court: sources

President Trump plans to announce that Amy Coney Barrett will be his nominee to the Supreme Court to fill the seat vacated by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, multiple sources told Fox News on Friday.

The president is expected to make the announcement during a White House event on Saturday. Barrett currently serves as a judge on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Trump, who has a campaign rally scheduled later Friday night in Virginia, declined to say who he will announce when pressed by reporters at Joint Base Andrews. “You’ll find out tomorrow,” he said.

The announcement is certain to ignite a bruising election-year confirmation battle, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to put up Trump’s nominee for a vote.

Why the coming recession could force the Federal Reserve to swap greenbacks for digital dollars

The Federal Reserve has never been more famous than it is today. It drew praise, and ire, for its handling of the financial crisis a decade ago, and the extraordinary measures it took subsequently to stimulate the U.S. economy have made it an important driver of financial markets. Meanwhile, President Trump has made its chairman, Jerome Powell, a household name by frequently criticizing the central bank’s policies on Twitter and to the press.
